Welcome to Caribe Sunset...one of the premier vacation rentals in Mexico! This
luxury penthouse is located on the beautiful island of Cozumel, just one block
from the Caribbean!
The penthouse spans two floors with two bedrooms, two
and a half bathrooms, and three Mexican-tiled,
whirlpool tubs, with one on the rooftop terrace
for enjoying the sunsets and evening stars. We have just added a
new palapa on the main rooftop terrace for all-day
private island lounging! You can climb the spiral staircase to access the
Sunset Terrace providing incredible views and breezes! Also, Caribe Sunset has recently been upgraded with a state of the art water purification system...."Yes you can drink the water!"
Caribe Sunset is a beautifully appointed penthouse that will sleep
five guests. There are two bedrooms
located on the third and fourth floors. Each is furnished with a queen-sized
bed (the master bedroom has a romantic wrought-iron bed!)
and a private bathroom with whirlpool. In addition, the living room contains a
full-sized futon that can accommodate one adult or two children.
The home is full of large windows and sliding glass doors, a beautiful,
private rooftop terrace with palapa, and a balcony to capture the sunlight and the
ocean breezes that are always available. The master bedroom has a
15-foot domed ceiling that naturally circulates the cool
breezes, or, of course you can always turn on the air-conditioner. On the private
rooftop terrace there is a whirlpool and a dining area to enjoy comfortable outdoor
living.
The furniture is handmade, and the doors and cabinetry are custom-built. A
decorator brought in fabrics, tiles, and paint to create
an authentic Mexican theme in the warm colors of the sunset. To make you feel
like a true native, Caribe Sunset boasts colorful artwork that was selected from all over Mexico.
Caribe Sunset is completely up to date with AC throughout,
a fully-equipped kitchen (with convection oven and stovetop,
microwave, blender, juicer, cappuccino/espresso machine, coffee maker, etc.), VCR, TV,
cable with English channels, stereo, CD player, washer, dryer, iron, hair
dryer, winding staircase, vaulted domed ceiling, and a giant walk-in closet in the master
bedroom. There are informative books about Cozumel, Mexico and its history, games, movies, and music.
We also offer a small paperback library with a “take a book, leave a book” policy!
Caribe Sunset is conveniently located in the
highly desirable and secure Corpus Christi neighborhood,
and you can walk nearly everywhere. Cozumel is a very safe island, and we always feel
safe walking through town even at night. The ocean, restaurants, and shopping are just a
short stroll away. If you do need a taxi, they are readily available just around the corner..
This penthouse is perfectly situated for families, divers, adventure-seekers, or those who
just want to relax. Cozumels best grocery store, Chedraui,
and a brand new mini-mall are just across the street. If you like, you
can shop for fresh Mexican pastries and produce everyday, then catch a movie at the
six-screen theater in the mall.
If you are interested in chartering a boat for a day of
fishing or diving, let us know and we will be happy
to connect you with our favorite operations.

Caribe Sunset was the perfect place for us. As a frequent visitor to the island, I have stayed in hotels, apartments, oceanside villas, and B&Bs. Your place was the most comfortable, welcoming and homiest lodging I have ever stayed in. The photos on your website do not do it justice.
There was not one thing during that whole week that we lacked. An abundance of beach towels, every kitchen appliance and gadget, working AC and internet are just a few of the things that made our stay so enjoyable. The rooftop terrace was frequently used, from coffee in the morning, to after-beach relaxing in the whirlpool, to visiting with friends over cold Sols in the evening. The convenience of Chedraui and the "beer warehouse" made provisions a breeze.
You have a true gem and I am grateful that you are so generous as to open your lovely slice of paradise IN paradise to guests.

The Caribe Sunset penthouse was so relaxing and in such a convenient location. We felt so lucky to
be right across the street from grocery shopping and not far from any place really. We thoroughly
enjoyed the terrace and being high above everything. It was great to fix a bedtime drink and sit
out on the terrace in the cool tropical breeze in complete privacy...
Your place is absolutely charming and just as comfortable as can be. It makes the perfect "home
base" here on the island! We loved the color scheme, we loved how you guys have it decorated, we loved everything about it. We felt sorry for the people we met who were staying in a hotel! Our
was a much richer experience staying in your beautiful penthouse!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at your beautiful condo. Not only were we
impressed by the size of the place, but the way it was decorated made you
feel you were definitely in for a good time! The rooms are huge! I also
used your kitchen quite a bit and every utensil I needed was furnished
for our use. It felt like home. We both appreciated the location of the
condo as well, within walking distance of two shopping malls and a food
market. The people of Cozumel were incredible! Very friendly and we always
felt safe there. A beautiful island with beautiful people! The beaches were
great too! The best snorkeling I've done in years with a variety of fish and
coral formations that kept you coming back for more......and that's just what
we plan on doing. We'll definitely be back and I'll give you a call.
Thanks again. Leslie

We really enjoyed our week at your lovely condo in Cozumel. We would definitely
book again on our next trip.

Hi Pat,
The condo was INCREDIBLE!!!!! The photos don't do it justice. I loved being so close to Chedraui and it was an easy walk to Hotel Barracuda to catch my dive boat.
I would like to reserve the condo for the same time frame next year!
Once again, thank you so much for a great condo and a great stay!!

Just thought I'd take a minute to let you know how we did at your tropical "get away".
I love the way you've decorated the place! It makes me want an extra home to decorate
myself. My boys had the time of their lives in Cozumel...but then at 17 and 18 years old,
wouldn't you too?
We sat out on the deck in the moonlight. I wanted them to experience life as it is in
Mexico, and they did. We had no need for the air conditioner, the weather was very comfortable,
never too hot or humid. We really enjoyed our vacation, love Mexico and how easy it is to just
kick back when you're there. Thank you for opening your beautiful home away from home to us,
we'd love to go back again someday. Adios!!

Just an update on the New La Choza. This has long been one of our favorite island eateries, but we have not been to the new location. Checked it out last pm and while we still like the Mayan Chic of the old place, the new Choza will grow on us. The food was better than we remembered and considering how dead the island is they were very busy!
The Car Ferry Company is offering their "Summer Special Family Car Rate" of $300 pesos per carload. The sale runs through August. So pack up the family wheels with everyone you can jam in and hit the Road or Ferry as it were.
The streets were packed the other night with pre-election mobs blocking traffic for what seemed like miles. Live music at the Palacio brought the masses out and they even stayed to listen to the speeches. All the fuss will be over Sunday.
And by the way, liquor sales will now halt at 12 am Sunday and begin again at midnight Sunday night. The only places allowed to sell booze will be hotels and then only to guests who are dining there. Stock up today before the rush!

We are in Mexico, so the usual "almost daily" update will be done on a catch-as-catch can basis. It's tough to post island news when you want to get out and experience it first hand. We will do what we can do!
We always warn visitors to Cozumel to check their check after dining out. Lots of places on the island like to tack on Tax to the bill. By law all taxes are included in the price of the food. Sr. Iguanas on the East Side has been caught and adminished by PROFECO, the admonishing arm of the law in Mexico, several times. If mysterious taxes turn up on your bill mention PROFECO to the waiter or just consider that those "taxes" will be the waiters tip.
In any event let us know about this kind of thing.
Another of PROFECO's jobs is halting the sale of fake jewels on Cozumel to unsuspecting tourists. But it seems that PROFECO does not what to do it's job. They say they aren't experts in gemology and can't tell a ruby from a radish. "Well if they can't do their job then maybe it's time for them to looks at their job descriptions," say island officials. They add that this kind of thing is like a "cancer" to the island!
As usual our philosophy is if you are going to buy jewels and silver on Cozumel know something about what it is you are buying. Heck, if the officials who are supposed to enforce the law can't tell the difference between real and fake what chance does the average tourist have!

About 150 people turned out for the Gay Pride Parade in the center of Cancun this weekend. It almost turned into an ugly confrontation when the Gays and a Political Rally both tried to use one of the city parks at the same time. The PRI party invited the Gays to join them in peace and understanding. The Gays said their "pink vote" was not for sale! Sounds like A Fun Time was had by all!
Cancun was also the scene of a Killer Bee Attack on Sunday. Paramedics called to the location could not get out of the ambulance the swarm was so bad. People were just running away! Eventually the bees went off to do bee things and 10 people were treated and released. Three persons were taken to Hospital suffering from severe stings! Remember...if you see a swarm of bees call the Cozumel Fire Department.
We will be on the road for Cozumel and will probably not post more news until July 1st!

Please keep in mind that Mexico's new user friendly drug laws have not yet gone into effect. Many people we have spoken too on the island think this law has passed. Not the case! Three locals were arrested for smoking pot near the waterfront yesterday. We do not know if they were fined or not nor how long they were detained for.
We will post the news when or if this becomes a law, but the word on the street is that this bill will not be signed law till after the July 4th weekend election.

It appears that all School Graduation Ceremonies on Cozumel will be canceled. There are apparently large fees and charges associated with these Cermonies. Authorities feel that due to the depressed economy that it would be a burden to families having to fork over extra money at this time. There is no mention if Graduation Cermonies will be held at a later date.
A Mexican Couple was apprehended In flagrante delicto on Ave 45. The fine for "Doing It In The Road" on Cozumel is $450 pesos per person. It certainly would have been cheaper to "Get a Room"! Now how do you say that in Spanish?

Authorities are investigating the source of the pollution at Caletita Beach. There is a natural cavern venting cold water out on the north side of the little bay near the lighthouse. They suspect that is the outlet for the contamination but do not know how the sewage is getting into the underground water. At this point they do not plan on closing the beach. However if the pollution levels go over 500ppm they say they will close it to public use.
Meanwhile authorities say they don't have a clue as to the source of pollution at Playa Las Casitas. We suggest they just drive past it....we have always smelled something foul in that area. FYI they have never closed a beach on the island because of pollution.
We think all this is just a sign that Cozumel has finally become overbuilt. And there is no end in sight. We had heard that workers in the new Caleta Marina had already punched into the underground water table and allowed sea water in. Sewer lines start to leak and pretty much no one bothers to make repairs. The island has many wells and it would be easy to dump waste and sewage into one...where it would just be carried away and become "Someone Else's Problem".

Two of Cozumel's beaches have made the list of the Top 100 Polluted Mexican Beaches. That is not a good list to be on! Coming in at 37 on the list is "Caletita" and "Las Casitas" takes the 68th spot. Both of these beaches are frequented by locals more than tourists. Playa Bonita on the East Side would have come in at 120 if the list had gone that high.
The pollutant is sewage. These beaches are not polluted all the time....just some of the time.

Airport Officials are reporting that the Cozumel Airport is Drug Free. By that they mean that no drug shipments have been found passing through the airport. Of course this could also just mean that no one has found any drugs yet or that no one is looking for any drugs or that everyone is on the take and they will never find any drugs!

Capture a Lion Fish...Win a Prize! This appears to be the new program on Cozumel to eradicate these predators. Prizes being discussed include Swim with the Dolphin Passes and Submarine Rides.
So far some 15 of these fish have been caught, all on Southern Reefs. More Lion Fish are suspected on the Northern Reefs too. Lion Fish will eat pretty much anything but especially enjoy parrot fish, prawns and even conch. Left unhindered they will decimate the sealife in these waters.
Reality for Cozumelenos living on Credit beyond their means is finally catching up with them. That has brought out another unwelcome Life Form....the Bill Collector, but with a twist. These guys on the island don't chat politely with the dead beat in an office or call him on the phone (most people don't have a phone anyway). They stand in the street in front of his house and yell and scream. They pound on doors and let the neighbors know all the details. In short they try to embarrass the debtor into submission! If this works in Mexico it may be the wave of the future in the States....Diabolical!

Fifty two boats participated in the Annual Youth Fishing Tournament on Cozumel this past weekend. Some 250 children armed with life jackets and coolers of drinks, fished the day away. Awards were made in the categories of Trolling and Bottom Fishing. The winning fish was a 30 pound Dorado.
News Flash from Mexico City....Weather Watchers are expecting a "Category 3 type Hurricane" along the Mayan Riviera this September. They have advised that damages would only be slight. We wish the weather men in the US of A could be this certain of the future!
Requirements may have changed for bringing pets into Cozumel. We have reports that the US Vet must now issue a certificate stating that the animal has tested "negative for worms". Keep in mind that this rule may or may not be enforced depending on who you talk to and what time of day it is!

Cozumel has been named "Isla of Peace" by the United Nations. The Island gets a nice banner to display and the distinction of being a safe place to vacation and to live. Cozumel is one of the few places in Mexico that has not seen any violence since Mayan times!

Hotels on Cozumel are nearing 50% occupancy. That is good. For a hotel to make money it needs to be at least 50% full. The feeling though is that this may be the best the hotel industry will do this summer as tourism is just not comng back as planned.
TIDBITS:
Bowling is rumored to be a big hit with the Local Crowd.
Cozumel Mini Golf has reopened at last.
The Plaza of the Sun on the Square may be up for sale....no business there either.
So much for our report that fruit and veggie prices had exploded on Cozumel. We now have word that the Price of Limes....always a leading economic indicator for us...is at an eye popping low of about 20 cents for 2 pounds! All we can say is "Pass the Tequila!"

More warnings of jewelry stores on Cozumel selling fake merchandise. The powers that be, of course, want to stop this as it gives the island another Black Eye. This type of thing has been occurring for years though. Stores can sell so many fake items that even When they are caught and fined they still come out ahead.
If you buy something that you think might be a bogus item just take it back to the shop and complain. The store will take it back without an issue....happy that you did not notify the authorities!
On the upside things could be worse....Imagine how bad it would be if Taxi Drivers (not the most honest in dealing with tourists in the best of times) started selling jewelry...Yikes!
The Mayor of Cozumel has begun lobbying for hotel development on the Wild Side of the Island. This would be a continuation of the failed Donald Trump Project north of Mezcalitos. The Mayor has hopes of diversifying tourism and weening the island away from dependency on the Cruise Business. His plan is not on so grand a scale as The Donald's....no Marina or airport. The scheme is to locate "Punta Arrecifes" somewhere along the East Coast Road.
Sounds like it will still depend on Tourism though!
In more East Side News...a warning has been issued to travelers using the road there. Apparently it is crumbling in spots and a danger to the unwary driver. Much of the road South of Coconuts has pretty much been in a sad state since Hurricane Wilma.

The New Marina at Caleta south of town may not open at all. Now that the project is 80% complete it seems that El Presidente Hotel is wanting some huge concessions for the use of their land. Things like having to pay no taxes at all for 12 years....and free land in another state of Mexico. How often have we said...."It's always something!"
The excitement of looking for drugs in Playa Del Carmen has apparently carried over to Cozumel. The military now has Hummers driving around town looking for drugs and drug dealers. There was supposedly a large military presence at the airport yesterday for just that purpose. We are still waiting for the passing of Mexico's new and improved (and more user friendly) drug laws.
A new program of music and fun will begin soon on Cozumel. In an effort to bring tourists into town, there will be live music and who knows what else in the Square every Tuedsay and Thursday from 7:30 to 10:30 pm. Known as "Noche Bohemias" (Bohemian Nights), the plan is hoped to revitalize the downtown area and make it seem like the Sunday Festival 3 nights a week.
We are reminded that a similar program of roving musicians and art displays has been tried in the past. It did not last long. We hope music in one specific location will be more successful.

Wrecks on Cozumel...there can easily be more than 1 a day! Mexicans can get a DL wihout too much effort and many drive without one. Taxis and Police seem to be always running into stuff. The best advice when driving on the island is "watch out for the other guy" and avoid motor scooters!
Sand Dredging Flash!!...Now the word is that this highly controversial project may not start till 2010. Bad news for the Cancun and Playa Hotels who are frantic for this sand. Good news for Cozumel....Delay, Delay, Delay!

Cozumelenos catering to the Cruise Industry are almost Dancing in the Streets! The Disney Magic is scheduled to overnight on the Island this Wednesday. It has long been our contention that more cruise ships should overnight at their Ports Of Call. It gives the passenger a much better look at all that town has to offer. The usual 7 to 10 hours of island time just does not do it!
We hate to see any kind of Price Increases....Especially enormous ones. One of our Favorite Restaurants, Thai Noodle House has almost doubled the price of their Large Noodle Bowls. The reported jump from $90 pesos to $160 is extreme and shameless.
These are difficult times for everyone and restaurants need to make money. But we see this attitude in Mexico all the time...."If I can gouge a tourist today then there will be another one coming along tomorrow and I can gouge them too"!
The Tahi Noodle bowl at $90 pesos was a great deal....at $160 we will go elsewhere!

Chankanab Park is reducing it's admission rate....but only for Mexican Nationals. If business has been bad, one would think they would reduce the rate for everyone and really increase the crowds! The New Mexi-Nat Rate is now $150 pesos and kids are $75 pesos. The rate for Non-Mexicans will stay at $220 pesos.
This past weekend Tourists on Playa Del Carmen's famed 5th Ave got to see Mexico's Drug laws in action. Some 40 heavily armed commandos blocked off the street for about an hour. They arrested 5 suspected drug dealers and confiscated a variety of drugs.

Seen any Bees on the isla? If so call the fire department. They are the Bee Hombres and responsible for corralling the little stingers. About 20 hives a month are taken care of. No one has ever been stung to death on Cozumel.
Authorities on Cozumel are working hard to close some 16 small shops that sell booze with out a license. These Houses of Hooch face fines as well as jeering and finger pointing by their neighbors. They also are closed till fines are paid. Thus far only about 5 have been shut down.
More news on the Sand Extraction: With this project ready to start any day about 20 Cozumelenos say they would rather die than see sand removed from the Island's shores. Accordingly they are prepared to throw themselves in front of the dredging equipment. We hope it does not come to this!

The Cancun tourist industry is celebrating as a winner has been announced to do The Cozumel Sand Dredging. Work on this massive removal of sand from the north end of the island is now set to commence around July 15 and conclude in December.
Meanwhile, on Cozumel the public is still attempting to halt this project....mainly with a petition. The last ditch hope is to only allow this dredging project to happen one time and then in the future they would have to go elsewhere for sand.
Tourism is at such an all time low in Cancun that boat owners are having to sell off their fleet at rock bottom prices. Some reports state that fully half of the boats used for toursim in Cancun are for sale. We have not heard about anything like this on the island but as Cancun Toursim goes so goes the Isla.

Big News today is that a 6 foot gator was captured in Puerto Abrigo on Cozumel. This is the larger harbor north of town. Fireman were called and lassoed the gator and hauled him off to the fire station. He has since been delivered to the lagoon along the north shore.
We know from personal observation that there are several alligators living in the swamp behind Abrigo. They like to feed in the harbor at night and there are lots of fish parts dumped there by fisherman for them to chow down on.
Early morning Ferry Service has begun again. There is now a 5am departure from Cozumel and a 6am departure from Playa del Carmen. Rates have not been lowered...no surprise there!
A company has been hired to do the Sand Dredging on the North Shore of Cozumel. Work is set to commence in about 15 days and they say it will take till the end of the year....We suspect longer though with Hurricane season just begun followed by Norte Season in the Fall. Three barges were sunk attempting this project last year.

Who says fishing is not any good on Cozumel anymore? The latest winner of one of several Fishing Tournaments on the island landed a near 300 pound Blue Marlin. A good day of fishing in anyone's book!
When the City Government needs funds they turn to the police department. Obligingly the Cozumel PD set up check points this past weekend and collected 19 drunk drivers. Fines run about $130 pesos a pop.
Prices of some fruits and vegetables on Cozumel have increased 100%. The article says it is because of poorer than usual harvests but fuel costs also play a big part. The article noted that grapefruit has jumped from 5 to now 9 pesos per kilo. Potatoes have shot up from 12.50 to a budget busting 25 pesos....and Hass Avacados were 25 but are now 45 pesos a kilo. As usual I wonder what limes cost these days.

Officials have declared May the "Worst Month Ever" for the island of Cozumel when it comes to the economy. And June is not starting out much better. Cruise ships have been slow to return and the island is still very quiet. Even though they have been warned, Taxistas are back to gouging the tourists as usual.
Cozumel has about 32 persons that make their living from Black Coral. Legally they can harvest 100 pounds a month to carve, polish and sell in shops. With business being so bad they are not even pulling that much from the ocean. It sounds like a good time to make some deals on Black Coral items.

Cozumel is scheduled to become a Home Port for Pullmantur Cruises in November. A Home Port is where a cruise ship begins and ends it's trip.
This can be good news for tourism on Cozumel....hotels, restaurants and shops would all benefit as cruisers find they will have to stay over night at the begining or end of the cruise to make airline connections. That could mean repeat business for Cozumel as the island is suddenly "discovered" by people who might otherwise never stay for pleasure.
By our count this is the 3rd time that Cozumel was going to have been named a Home Port. None of those worked out and Cozumel is still a "Roam Port". Hopefully Pullmantur will have more luck.

There is always something new to find on the beach. Sixty pounds of Cocaine washed up on a Cozumel beach just the other day. Fortunately the military was there to take control of the situation and wisk the illegal drugs away for safe keeping! Note: Mexico has not yet passed their new drug laws.
Ferry prices from Cozumel to Playa Del Carmen are at 140 pesos per trip (280 rt) for tourists...an all time high! The mayor of the island is in discussion with the 2 competing ferry companies to reduce those rates as well as increase service. Ferries are now running every 2 hours instead of hourly. The Ferry companies enjoy the profits too much and it is doubtful the mayor will be successful in his cost cutting venture.

Let us know if you are interested in helping mark turtle nests and we can set this up during your stay on Cozumel.
Strip clubs on Cozumel!!! Yes indeed and 2 of them have just been closed for safety violations. Contact us for a list of the ones still open!

With 3 cruise ships having returned to Cozumel thus far, Taxi Drivers are being reminded daily to not cheat the tourists! They could be reminded of this anytime. However the fact that drivers are having to be admonished about this serves to point out that Taxistas are not the most scrupulous of Cozumelenos to deal with in the first place. Tourist Beware!
The number of Lion Fish removed from the waters of Cozumel now totals 9. The latest heavy feeder was brought to the Port Captains office alive. It is currently residing in a fish bowl on the Captains desk and being fed fish 3 times a day. They have named the fishy "Espartano" or "Spartan". We hope they do not decide to flush him down a toilet when he gets too large for the bowl!

Business at the Punta Longosta Mall has dropped off to nothing. What little cruise ship traffic there is has been is going to the International Piers to the south. One shop keeper stated that they had made $150 for the day....usually they would take in over $3,000!
It was announced in the Cancun paper that Sand Extraction on Cozumel is scheduled to begin on June 16. This has been delayed 4 times thus far. So much for Wednesday's meeting having any impact on changing the minds of the powers that be.
Hotel Occupancy on the island has risen to 25% following the Flu Fiasco. Airfares into Cozumel are at all time lows, and hotels are really making deals too. Owners of vacation rentals on the island are cutting rates at gorgeous properties all over the island. Good time to plan a cheap getaway!

Cozumelenos said "No" to the North Shore sand extraction at Wednesday's 10 hour meeting to clear the air about sand. But while Cozumel said "No", Cancun said "yes". It turns out that the head honcho responsible for deciding that Cozumel would provide all the sand has some 19 charges for corruption and illegal exercise of public office filed against him. Sounds like an excellent choice for this position.
It is fairly certain that Cozumel will provide the sand despite the fact that Cancun has more sand banks. A Spanish expert in construction of beaches and resorts stated some time ago that because of overdevelopment Cancun beaches would NEVER be able to keep sand on them.
The first Cruise ship in some 32 days docked on Wednesday. The mayor welcomed the ship (he skipped out on the Sand Meeting) and awarded a 5 night Cozumel vacation to the first couple to step off the boat. He declared that this is "a great day for Cozumel".

Now with tourism starting to pick up there is a worry that unscrupulous salesmen of tours and services will try to make back their losses quickly. That means over pricing unsuspecting tourists! We hate that!
If you do not feel the price of something is fair...bargain for a lower one, or just walk away.
Also please check your bill at all restaurants ...especially those on the East Side. There should be NO separate charge for tax...all tax is included in the price of food in Mexico. If you are charged a tax then point it out to the water. If he says something like that is for the kitchen help or refuses to remove it than let him know that will be his tip then too. Some little excitement was added to a Cozumel family outing this weekend when they found a dead crocodile at Barracuda Beach on the North Shore. While there was no sign of what killed the small croc it did have a Bat Fish in it's mouth. We googled "Bat Fish" and it did not look tasty at all. The lesson here is not to eat Bat Fish.
Cancun is facing some hard times with tourism down. We have word that police cars have been mostly out of gas since Monday. It seems they had not paid their gas supplier and so have been cut off till the bill is paid. Oddly enough the supplier would be Pemex, owned by the Mexican Government.

Another "Window to the sea" is in the process of being closed. This is the term Cozumelenos use when refering to the view of the ocean they used have from places in town. There used to be "windows" where El Cantil and Punta Longosta are, to name just a few....now these buildings are walls! Even when the new business fails the shell of that structure remains to block the view. Think of the old Dolphin Swim next to Margaritaville. The latest affront will be on the north side of Punta Longosta and looks like it will be a restaurant. The island is in dire need of another restaurant.

We have now heard a not so wild report that the Cozumel Taxistas are going to receive $5,000 pesos per driver! This money is going to be coming from the Federal Government and that means politics are involved. The Cab Union is a powerful voting bloc and can easily sway an election. No other group of employees affected by the Swine Flu shut down are going to receive any funds....only a bag of groceries.
Remember our advice and "don't tip the cabbies" unless they actually do something more than drive the cab. These guys are some of the highest paid groups on Cozumel.

We now have confirmation that San Gervasio is operating on a reduced daily schedule, but will be closed on Sunday.
Lovers of Cozumel are starting to think beyond this year's bad economy and Swine Flu fiasco and are planning vacations for 2010. This would be a good time to book before rates go up!

While controversy still swirls around the removal of sand from the North Shore of Cozumel there is a new Fly in the Ointment...Apparently Island Fisherman have long known about partially submerged Mayan Ruins on the atolls of the sand bank. Known as "Under Cozumel" this sand bank has been located on navigational charts for years but of the ruins little is known. Supposedly they are small structures, stellae and temples. These will all be permanently lost if the dredging of sand for the beaches of Cancun and Playa goes forward!
Cruise ships have returned to Acapulco but thus far none have returned to Cozumel. When they finally do the first ship will be welcomed in fine Cozumel Style with Mariachi bands and dancing. This same type of greeting met the first cruise ship to return to the island after Hurricane Wilma. Frankly music and merriment should be part of the welcome package for every cruise ship that docks on the island, not just the first one following a disaster.

To help you navigate the streets of the island we have added a new Cozumel Map to our website. Note that Caribe Sunset is marked "L". We plan on updating this on a regular basis as we add rental properties and find favorite restaurants.
To zoom in on the map right click on your mouse and select "view photo" or just push "ctrl" and "+".
Cruise ships are rumored to be returning to Cozumel May 27th and 29th. Hopefully this will be the case but we always adopt a wait and see attitude on reports like this.
Another bad rumor we are following is that the San Gervasio Ruins are closed until further notice. This would be for lack of tourists.
Also confirmed is that the Punta Sur Lighthouse and Chankanab Park will be operating on a reduced daily schedule and closed Sundays.

More and more of Cozumel's shops are offering merchandise at discounts. Another sign of hard times. Of course there are not many people on the island to buy much of anything.
Some 20+ hotels from Cancun to Tulum have reported closing for the "Flu Holiday". So far the only hotel to shutdown on Cozumel has been the Melia, and that is just till the end of May....maybe!

Cozumel's new and supposedly improved Ferry Pier is set to finally open in 15 days (maybe). We do not like this multi-story, mega structure at all. It blocks the breezes and according to many locals along the water it really blocks the view of the harbor and sunsets.
We certainly miss the much smaller open air ferry pier of old.

In maybe the best news of all for island locals and many expats...the Cantinas of Cozumel reopened today! Cantinas are Mexican institutions and more than just a bar to hang out in. The ritual is "you buy a drink and you get a free plate of snacks or botanas." As long as you are drinking then you are eating too.
Many of these are family oriented with a divider running between the mens and womens sides. You will even see kids on the family side of the bar. Many feature live music that can vary wildly in quality but never in volume with loud being the lowest and rapidly escalating to thunderous!
They are only open for certain hours of the day and close in the early evening...time for the breadwinner to get home to their families.
One of our favorites is El Gato Negro on Calle 6 between 20 and 25. We like it for the quality of snacks as well as the attractiveness of the waitresses. Check it out!

So many people are now out of work on Cozumel that food is being handed out just to help families get by. One of the more popular hand out choices is Tuna Fish!
Hotel occupancy has sunk to a low of 20% or less on Cozumel. Now is a good time to shop around for a cheap hotel room.

More openings have occured over the weekend. La Palapita is now reported open, as are internet cafes.

The German Consulate is most upset with the Mexican Government for closing all Ruins in the country. He stated that these are open air sites and not enclosed flu breeding zones...how can they be so stupid!

There are still no reported cases of flu on Cozumel. But the closures continue unabated. All the Cantinas are closed until May 6th. Also reported closed are the movie theaters and internet cafes. Even one of our favorite beach bars, La Palapita, is closed.
Reportedly open at this moment are the East side bars and some beach clubs. The ferrys are running, but no cruise ships are stopping. Some shops in town are closed and some open, but since May 1 is a holiday in Mexico that may not be a good indicator of flu related closures. The grocery stores are all open.
If you have any friends in prison you will not be able to visit them until further notice!
We have heard many rumors but will not report them until reasonably confirmed.

Things are changing fast on the Cozumel Flu front. As of yesterday Carnival and several other cruise lines have decided not to stop in any Mexican ports for at least 10 days. After that who knows?
We have seen reports that this travel ban may last until June. The lack of cruisers on the island can be a mixed blessing....good for non-cruisers as they don't have geezers in black socks to look at, but bad for locals as they have no business. In any event we wish we were there now. We love the island when things are slow.
Also, the wonderful Festival at Cedral has been canceled. We can not figure out why as there still have been no reported cases of Flu on Cozumel.

The Festival at Cedral is currently taking place. This is like a Mexican County Fair with bull fights, horse races, boxing matches, music, dusty streets and lots of food and beer. Most of the fun stuff takes place during the heat of the day. We like to go in the late afternoon. There are shuttles running from the parking lot next to the Chedraui for very little money. Look at this like an old time "Blue Plate Special" for lunch with 2 to five menu options served Monday through Friday. We like this because one choice is usually vegetarian. The meal comes with a drink, soup and entree often with rice and a vegetable...so it can be pretty substantial. Prices start at 50 pesos and go up to about 60...a very good deal. Check out La Choza on 10th and Villas Caribe on 11th, but there are lots of these little eateries all over the island.

Probably the biggest question we get regarding our rental properties is "How far away is the Beach?" That tells us that some folks are not really familiar with Cozumel and it's 2 sides. Not every island in the world is one big beach. Cozumel is many beaches....some wild and natural and some small and man made.
The wild ones on the East Side can run for miles. Since there is no electricity and only a hand full of beach bars that can make for an incredibly relaxing day of surf, sun and sand.
The West side beaches are normally built up sand over rock....But what makes that special is that you can step into turquiose waters that are literally 10 feet deep and full of sea life. Clear, calm water and lots of fish can also make for a relaxing day of diving or snorkeling right from the shore. Of course with either spot you can just sit and stare at Paradise!
So decide how you want to spend your day. Ask us and we can send you to some of our favorite spots around the island!

The Club Med 2, a 5 masted old style crusie ship will be in Port a couple of Sundays in April. It carries less than 600 crew and passengers. The ship will also be making stops in Belize, Honduras, Havana, Progresso and more. The cruises last from 8 - 14 nights.

The schedule calls for 23 cruise ships in Cozumel's Port for the week of April 13-19.
The New Park in front of the Palacio is now fully open. Animals for kids to climb on and fountains to splash in. This is on Melgar at the corner with the stop light.

The bus departs when full and runs the East Coast stopping at beaches along the way. This service is supposed to be just for the Easter Holidays and Exact hours and prices were still not published. If you need the perscription cream Metrogel Save big buying it on Cozumel. The 30g tube runs 170 pesos (less than $15). In the States it costs around $100.
Sunday is the day with the fewest cruise ships on Cozumel. It is also the day when the beaches on the East Side are the most crowded with locals.
Other Favorite Properties
Okay, Sra. Glory is very
vegetarian and Sr. Pat is a carnivore. We both like margaritas and good
deals, and all these pretty much fit that bill. Try a few, but check
out some new ones and let us know what you find. Tell the folks
that you are staying at Caribe Sunset and that we recommended
them, and sometimes they will give you a price break!
- La Choza::
Great food at really good prices. They specialize in an orange margarita
that we don’t like, so ask for a regular lime one and watch out. They
will cook your catch at a great price too. Nacho is our favorite waiter!
Easy walk, stagger home. (R. Salas at 10th Ave.)$-$$
- http://www.lachozarestaurant.com/
- Especias::
This is one of our favorite restaurants. You can feast on the appetizers
alone but everything is wonderful. Lots of veggie friendly fare (empanadas
are to die for!). Adrian is a wonderful host, and if you hit it off
will be happy to take you on an island tour. For the quality and the
amount of food, the prices are a steal!
Closed Sundays. On 3rd between 5th and 10th.
$-$$
- Pancho’s Backyard::
Inside Los Cinco Soles store at the North end of Ave. Melgar on the
water. Go before 9 pm and browse the pricey stuff at the shop (don’t
buy overpriced bottles of liquor here!), and then enjoy great food and potent margs
in the courtyard. Try the mole and fish served on the grills. Offers
good vegetarian section on menu (try the Chiles Rellenos with Plantains
and Walnuts!). Take a cab up and then enjoy the walk home through town.

You will pass it on the way home from Pancho’s on Melgar. Small, daily
menu of pasta and seafood, but very romantic. Get a seat by the window
in front for the view and the AC, or check out the gorgeous courtyard
in the back and dine under the stars and trees. Closed Sunday. Amex
and cash only. $$$
- Jeanie’s::
They have rebuilt the beach and added a great palapa so you can enjoy
the view and just spend the day, or dine on the street and watch the
tourists wander past. Food is always good. On Melgar near the stop light,
next to Margaritaville. $$
- Prima’s::
Ok Italian with an attitude. Get a table by the railing and enjoy the
view. Cheap Margs! Good wine selection and authentic Cuban cigars downstairs.
Word on the street is that Prima's will be moving into the Wynston. We will
let you know. $$-$$$
- Casa Mission::
Take a cab both ways. Old hacienda east of downtown. Very good everything
and free strolling musicians to go with a usually very fun evening.
Ask to see the zoo! Glory loves the lions! (You will be glad you took
a cab). Its sister, La Mission, is in town (see below). $$-$$$

One half-block inland off the south side of the square. Great people

any proof)! Food is fine and the margs were much improved.$$-$$$
- http://www.casadenis.com/index.htm
- Casablanca::
Next to Casa Dennis, but closer to the square. We used to rave about
this place, then paned it and now like it again. Like so much on Cozumel there is lots
of change. On our latest visit the service was great
and water showed up right away.
The Chicken and Mayan dishes were very good. Get the
Free Margarita card before you sit down.$-$$
- Las Tortugas::
Straight inland on 17th past the yellow church about 6 blocks
to the next divided street, 30th. Go right about 2 blocks and it’s
on the main drag. I used to like the low prices but they have recently
gone up! More good margs. The veggie menu is limited, but their cheese
rellenos were good. Tip: Ask to see the menu that the locals
get! $$

- Jardin de Super
Light: This used to be the “Day’s Inn” and is now the Villas
Caribe. Lovely location by the swimming pool and great, cheap food
make this a hit. Daily specials include a veggie choice, soup and drink
for $4. Dine till 7pm and spend the day by the pool. On 11th
between 20 and 25. $

Cheap, late night greasy spoon place located ½ block from the square
on 5 Sur. When nothing else is open and you have had many Margs, this
is the place. We heard they are open until 5 am some nights! $
- La Mission:
Just off Melgar a block south of the square. Same owners as Casa Mission
but a livelier atmosphere. Huge filet mignon that was great at $17.
Glory was not impressed with the quality of the veggie menu. $$
- Los Chilangos:
This is great for lunch! Like eating in a typical Cozumeleno home. Limited
menu changes daily and you sit family style. Always a veggie choice
and only $4-$5 for plenty of food; you can also request half orders.
Go east on 15th one block and turn left on 10th
for a half block. They have a sign now, so it’s easier to find. $
- Chi: Chinese
place right on Melgar over the Pizza place on Calle 3. Very good for
a change of pace. Sushi as well as all the regular Chinese stuff. Great
views too! $$-$$$
- Plaza Leza:
On the square so excellent people watching. On our last 2 trips here the food has been poorly prepared and the margaritas tasted like sea water. So we are taking this off our list of good places to eat.$-$$
- El Morro:
Get directions as this old favorite is inland behind the Pemex station.
Streets are dusty and this is in a little neighborhood but don’t be
fooled cause it looks like a pit, as the food is great and the prices
are some of the best. Mayan pork thing and chicken with ham and peas
were very good. Mole was a bit salty. Our last visit prices seemed to
have gone up. $-$$
- Rock N’Java:
On Melgar next to Cozumel Living. Glory loves this place as it is air
conditioned, very veggie friendly and you have a great view of the ocean.
Huge $60 peso burger too. Open late. $$

‘n Go: Great little sushi bar right in the neighborhood. Limited
menu, but we have liked it all. Spicy Tuna roll very spicy $5. Located
½ block from Margaritaville on Calle 11.
- Mission Grill:
Owned by the fine folks who own Casa Mission, this is another place
loved by locals. Fish dinner for $80 pesos and Tortilla Soup for $30
pesos that could be a meal by itself. Excellent veggie Rellenos. Located
north on 30th just past San Francisco grocery and Covi’s
liquor store on the west side of the street. $

Newly reopened to very good reviews. This a “special event” kind
of place with higher prices and ambience to match. Our latest guests
enjoyed it very much. On 8th north between 15th
and 25th. $$$
- Wynston’s:
This is the latest in 5 star dining on Cozumel. Great big view and prices
to match! Located at the top of El Cantil on Melgar. $$$$$
- Zapata Grill:
(Also known as Al Pie del Carbon) Now this is a grill! Open flame
cooking over real logs! Grilled veggies on skewers and the meats are
great. The grilled fish is THE BEST and at a great price! Calle 6 North
on the corner with Ave. 5. The small dining room is air conditioned.
$$
- Sorrisi:
Gelato and Pasta in a now lovely space. The food and service are great.
Pat says this is the best pizza on the island! Prices have really gone
up there though; $9 for a bottle of water and $8 for a small margarita
are not so good! Near the water on Calle 3. $$$
- Albinos:
We were not overwhelmed by this island institution. We got the crab
and it tasted like it had been frozen for a while. Next time we will
go with more fresh fare. Very cute place and easy to find near the north
of 20th. $$

Another island fav that some people love. Tony is always there and is
Mr. Personality. Pat loved the ribs! Otherwise not so veggie friendly
unless you like pasta. On 5 Sur ½ block south of the square. $$

This is a new classy little place with good food and high prices. Very cute courtyard out back. They cooked up our barracuda to perfection!
North of the square on 5th. $$$
- R J Thai Noodle House:
This is the first Thai restaurant on Cozumel. It has fast become one of our faves with OK food. You mix and match noodles and create dozens of unique dishes! The smaller bowl is plenty of food too! On 11thacross from the new park. (Note: Prices have almost doubled here since our last visit. BEWARE) $$$$
- Chilangos:
This is a very good, very local hang only open for dinner. You look at all the food in the window and point at what you want inside your "huarache" or shoe. Lots of veggie selections. They now have a full bar. On 30th before you get to the Pemex. $
Hint: We save a
bundle by bringing To go cups
full of margs everywhere! No problems. Also order glasses
of water, as this is pure water from big bottles. Some restaurants
will give you a free little marg or a beer with dinner but you
have to ask before hand.
More Hints: some
restaurants now refuse to serve you a free glass of pure drinking water.
They want to over charge you for a bottle! Solution: Bring your own!
Beware:
Some restaurants in town are charging a tax on your meal.
All taxes are already included in the cost of food in
